Humanoid robots, a potential solution to Canada’s workforce crisis

The federal government’s plan to reduce temporary foreign workers, combined with Canada’s record-low fertility rate (1.33 children per woman) and persistent labour shortages, underscores the urgent need for innovation in the food and beverage processing sector.Canada’s population reached a historic high of 40.77 million in 2023, driven largely by temporary immigration. Despite this growth, the manufacturing sector, including food and beverage processing companies, face severe labour shortages. According to a study by Food Processing Skills Canada (FPSC), the Canadian food and beverage manufacturing industry will need at least 142,000 new people between 2023 and 2030. Further, Food and Beverage Canada found that manufacturers are typically understaffed by 25 per cent. With more than 8,200 processors in Canada, FPSC estimates that losses from job vacancies could total up to $9.3 million in net revenue per day or $3.4 billion per year. This is not a sustainable situation for the processing industry. Companies must find new ways to improve productivity on plant floors as traditional automation technologies have proven inadequate and businesses struggle to find workers for mundane and dangerous tasks.Ben Reed, CMO at Sanctuary AI (at the time of writing this article; Reed has since quit Sanctuary AI), which is on a mission to create general-purpose robots with human-like intelligence, highlighted the limitations of current technologies.“All of the present automation in manufacturing, called special purpose, is designed for one or a couple of specific things. The challenge in F&B manufacturing is that there are still things that require people to create the final product, and such roles can’t be automated with traditional special-purpose automation technologies,” he explained.Humanoid robotsThis is where humanoid robots, powered by artificial intelligence (AI) control systems, can play a disruptive role.“The approach should be to create a general-purpose robot that can do lots of different things because that’s what people essentially are in the labour force,” Reed said.Sanctuary AI believes two key things—dexterous human-like hands and an AI control system needed to drive the robot—enable this possibility. Dexterous human-like hands are important because “98.8 per cent of all work requires dexterous manipulation.” A general-purpose robot, such as Sanctuary AI’s Phoenix, can adapt to various tasks (e.g. bottling soda one day and wrapping a food product the next) due to its ‘human-like adaptability’. Carbon, Sanctuary AI’s artificial intelligence-enabled control system allows Phoenix to learn and understand the different tasks it’s required to perform.Sanctuary AI has launched various iterations of its Phoenix robot, but none are ready to be deployed in a factory setting. In 2023, it ran a week-long pilot test at a Mark’s retail store in Langley, B.C. Phoenix 7.0 was asked to perform 110 retail-related tasks, such as picking and packing merchandise, cleaning, tagging, labelling, and folding. Sanctuary is using the lessons learned during the pilot test to develop Phoenix 8.0.Switzerland-based Mimic has developed an AI-driven collaborative robotic hand. It raised US$2.5 million in a pre-seed funding round earlier this year. According to Mimic, the hand is designed to handle environments and tools made for humans and has been engineered to handle tough work conditions as well as fragile objects. It is also not ready for commercial deployment.Stephan-Daniel Gravert, co-founder of Mimic, said, “Most use cases are stationary and do not require a full humanoid robot with legs. That’s why we focus on data collection and hardware ingenuity on a universal robotic hand that is compatible with off-the-shelf industrial robotic arms for positioning.”Market potentialAccording to the Goldman Sachs report, Humanoid robot: The AI accelerant, which was released in February 2024, the global market for humanoid robots could reach US$38 billion by 2035 due to rapid development. Models can now train themselves instead of requiring human engineers to code everything. This has sped up robotic development, allowing these devices to do more tasks and adapt to new situations more quickly, said the report.Further, the hardware components required to make the robots, such as high-precision gears and actuators, cost less now, per the report. According to the Goldman Sachs report, the manufacturing cost of humanoid robots has declined from an estimated US$50,000 (lower-end models) and US$250,000 (high-end versions) per unit last year to US$30,000 and US$150,000 now.The report’s authors optimistically estimate the shipment of over 250,000 humanoid robots to factories across the world in 2030.However, the report is cautious about general-purpose robots. While, in theory, employing general-purpose robots can address a nearly infinite range of real-world problems, they’re not widely used because of the limited availability of training data for robots.Another challenge is to acquire enough hardware components to mass produce humanoid robots. As highlighted in the Goldman Sachs report, “some components need high-precision grinding machines that are limited in number, which makes it difficult to ramp up production. Costs for some components are still high because of limited industrial capacity or long manufacturing cycle times.”Additionally, the report highlighted “bottlenecks in the development of AI and software for robot manipulation (such as grasping objects) and interaction (taking voice commands from a person without training).”Possible solutionNevertheless, the Goldman Sachs report envisions that general-purpose humanoid robots will become the next ‘must-have’ device in manufacturing facilities, if innovation continues to unfold rapidly and the demand for these solutions rises. Automotive parts company Magna has invested in Sanctuary AI. According to a partnership agreement between the two companies, Magna will financially support Sanctuary AI’s development of general-purpose AI robots for deployment in Magna’s manufacturing plants.Sanctuary will have access to Magna’s product portfolio, engineering, and manufacturing capabilities to assess and improve the cost of manufacturing its robots as well as make it scalable.“Robots like Phoenix are designed to be able to function in an environment where a person would typically function” said Reed. “They have two arms, two hands, 10 fingers, a head, and they’re similar in size, height, shape, etc., to a person.”This human-like form factor is supposed to facilitate easier integration with existing systems. As Reed pointed out, “The great thing about a general-purpose technology is that it isn’t going to just be the large companies that are going to be able to leverage this technology. The system that we’ve produced is intended to be general purpose, enabling a much smaller company to be able to have this technology depending on what they’re doing.”SafetyAs with any emerging technology, the adoption of humanoid robots in manufacturing brings up concerns about safety and regulation. However, the proponents and developers are confident of integrating all required safety standards into the design of humanoids.Reed explained that this technology can address areas of operations that traditional automation has not been able to help with, thereby ‘closing that gap’.As mentioned earlier, Mimic robots are designed to fit into existing workflows. Co-founder Stefan Weirich said, “Conventional automation leaves a huge gap of tedious, low-to-medium volume manual labour tasks that often fall under the table because they are too complex or not economical to automate … Taking AI-driven robotic manipulation to the next level, we can now address these challenges.” In an era of declining birth rates and labour issues, robotics is emerging as a potential workforce solution.

SICK and Endress+Hauser announce strategic partnership

SICK and Endress+Hauser have announced a strategic partnership in process automation. SICK’s advanced gas analysis and flow measurement technology is now a part of Endress+Hauser’s instrumentation portfolio. In a press release on Jan. 7, Endress+Hauser Canada (E+H) said the collaboration aims to offer customers in the process industry enhanced support in increasing plant efficiency, protecting the environment and reducing carbon footprint.

As a result of the strategic partnership, around 800 sales and service employees from SICK will transfer to Endress+Hauser across 42 countries. According to E+H, the collaboration in process automation will allow customers to access a broader range of products from a single source and benefit from enhanced expertise in gas measurement technology. With its global sales network, Endress+Hauser will access new customers, reach additional industries and tap into further application areas.

The production and further development of the gas analyzers and flowmeters were brought together under the umbrella of Endress+Hauser SICK GmbH+Co. KG. SICK and Endress+Hauser will each hold 50 percent of the joint venture as of 1 March 2025. The company employs around 730 people at several German sites and will collaborate closely with Endress+Hauser’s product centers to drive product innovation and meet evolving market demands.

Lion Electric temporarily reduces workforce amid CCAA proceedings

Lion Electric announced Friday [Jan. 3] it’s temporarily laying off around 150 workers in Canada and the U.S., in the context of its ongoing proceedings under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA).The Montreal-based maker of electric buses and trucks says the latest round of layoffs affects all departments.In a press release, the company says that leaves around 160 workers, who will concentrate mainly on helping clients with the maintenance of school buses and trucks.Lion Electric, which has been going through financial difficulties, officially obtained creditor protection mid-December.In 2024, Lion Electric announced four waves of layoffs affecting around 920 workers, with the last one announced at the beginning of December.Over the past few years, the company has been financially supported by the federal and Quebec governments, the Fonds de solidarité FTQ and Fondaction, particularly through loans.

Bell-Everman ServoBelt Linear Actuators Feature Design Enhancements

The new design, which involves the lower static toothed belt, also strengthens ServoBelt’s ability to non-destructively withstand high-force events, such as carriage crashes.In earlier designs, the belt adhered to its aluminum carrier using 3M’s VHB adhesive tape. While strong, the VHB did complicate the assembly and installation process, requiring integrators to accurately apply the adhesive tape onsite at the actuator’s end-use location. This process also made it difficult to splice sections of ServoBelt together — which is essential when building systems with long travel axes — requiring higher attention to detail and cleanliness.Improving on the earlier design, ServoBelt now has a “rack” of teeth molded directly into the actuator’s aluminum carrier. The rack offers precision tooth forms identical to the static belt it replaces and is molded from an equally rugged polyurethane — with a 50 Shore D hardness and minimum 4,500 psi tensile strength. The design now allows integrators to splice ServoBelt sections just as easily as they would with a traditional rack-and-pinion, using a simple tool similar to a tooth rack. It also offers significantly more resistance to tearout forces than the earlier design.The latest generation of ServoBelt includes the new molded belt trays, along with QR codes to take personnel directly to the splicing instructions on the Bell-Everman website.

According to the EU, this “industry of the future” approach benefits industry, workers and society, in general.While talks about Industry 5.0 are starting to creep into the asset maintenance world, it’s prudent to first explore how pervasive its Industry 4.0 predecessor has become. Can industry truly make a leap to 5.0 without fully embracing big data, automation, AI and other innovations that create interconnected systems and processes?“This technology is growing so fast (and has become) far more accessible for people. But I find in maintenance, I’d focus on fixing the fundamentals first, because so many people love the idea of technology… but I don’t think they’re utilizing it enough,” says Matthew Laskaj, director of Project Engineering Management, a Scotland, UK-based engineering consultancy providing maintenance training, asset and project management.While advanced technologies, such as vibration analysis systems or predictive maintenance tools, have become more pervasive and, in many cases, more cost-effective, the missing link lies in the way they are being utilized—or underutilized—in maintenance and asset management.The integration of artificial intelligence and other advanced technologies into processes and management requires more than just purchasing the equipment, says Laskaj. It needs buy-in from the folks for whom these machines are intended to improve efficiency and performance.“I think the businesses, as a whole, would love all of this to be there right now, and they’re probably pushing it more with their strategies and five-year plans. But if you look at the ‘shop floor’ people, the ones who are actually doing the work, the technicians, the engineers, the supervisors and that level of management, they just want to (know) how they can do their job easier and better,” Laskaj says.Bridging that disconnect between the technology that’s being driven from the top down and the speed and efficiency by which these are adopted from the bottom up are key.The transitionWhen it comes to technology adoption, companies are at varying levels, according to Bailey Brandel, a solutions engineer at Prometheus Group, an asset management and maintenance solutions provider based in Raleigh, North Carolina.“Some people are still getting into digitizing their process. Some people are still on paper. Some people’s information might be on Excel spreadsheets or in their ERP systems, but they’re not using the kind of machine learning or AI to work with that data yet and take advantage of all the results that they could get from that data,” she explains.Prometheus’s asset management platform leverages machine learning and AI, and integrates with an organization’s enterprise resources planning (ERP) systems helping them gain better visibility on the health of their assets.“A lot of the companies we talk to have initiatives to move more towards Industry 4.0. I wouldn’t say we have any customers who are done with all their industry 4.0 initiatives. They are either thinking about it, just getting started or in the middle of those initiatives,” Brandel says.The transition to Industry 5.0, or even the adoption of 4.0 technologies, are not without challenges. But Brandel believes this new framework will benefit the maintenance field overall.“The maintenance and asset management industry will always have humans… We can’t replace them with AI, because they know so much about these different assets, and they’re actually carrying the wrenches on these specific assets, doing the fixes and things like that. So I think the handshake between AI, advanced technologies and maintenance is going to be really beneficial for the asset management space,” Brandel says.The challenge, she notes, will be in keeping people up to date on the new technologies and in successfully integrating these technologies with maintenance processes. But as new, younger and more technically proficient workers enter the workplace this integration can become much faster, Brandel adds.This is where digitization comes into play. Decades of machine and maintenance knowledge accumulated by senior staffers remain in analog form, on paper or stored in their brains. These data need to be digitized for continuity so the knowledge can be transferred to the next generation of workers.“It’s going to be really important to take advantage of all the work we did in the digitization stage in Industry 4.0, like having different task lists or how to do certain things, or what are the potential things that can go wrong with an asset. (These data) right now might be living just in people’s heads,” Brandel says. “There’s going be a lot of challenges, but I think we’re set up really well to embrace Industry 5.0—at least a lot of the main concepts of it in the asset management space.”Sustainability and resilienceIndustry 5.0 notwithstanding, recent global phenomena such as the ongoing effects of climate change and the lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic have caused authorities and industry to rethink existing methods and reshape systems and policies to a future that is responsive to these global challenges.The most recent update to the ISO Asset Management Standard, ISO 55001, for example, now aims to demonstrate how an organization’s asset management system contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.“(The standard) is now tending more towards the people side,” says Laskaj. “But also, one of the clauses (pertains to) sustainability, and it says climate change is an issue. So it’s actually got specific parts within asset management strategies that think about climate change.”ISO 55001 provides a framework for organizations to systematically and sustainably manage their assets throughout their lifecycle. ISO 55001:2024, which contains the latest updates to the standard, contains several new clauses that demonstrate a clearer focus on people and sustainability.“I think maintenance is going to play a huge part in the sustainability side of Industry 5.0 because we drive a lot of the decisions for either refurbishment or disposal,” Laskaj says.Through better maintenance, organizations can make their equipment last longer, reduce waste disposal and save on purchasing cost. Sustainable maintenance also means using materials that are more eco-friendly, such as biodegradable grease.“If we can get involved with purchasing, are we buying parts that can be re-used? Are we maintaining it to the best of our ability to prolong life rather than just buy a new one, because it’s not working? Are we buying refurbished parts, or refurbished kit even, rather than brand new?” Laskaj says.Machines and software can also play a role in sustainable and resilient asset and maintenance management, says Brandel. Developing software and AI tools that enable preventative and predictive maintenance can help asset managers prolong the life of an asset. “Just by taking care of our equipment using a predictive, AI-centric asset management program, we can make sure to make those repairs early enough so that we won’t be having to replace parts or order new things,” she says.Keys to successIt’s clear that asset and maintenance management will inevitably be riding the Industry 5.0 wave. The question is not when, but how? Transforming maintenance to align with the key pillars of human-centricity, resilience and sustainability will allow organizations to adopt quickly and effectively. Laskaj offers up some best practices for organizations: “One is knowing what is available… because the technology is evolving and changing so quickly, and the cost price is coming down,” he says.Understanding how these technologies are used and how they can apply to your organization are also important. It is also vital to work with the right partners that can provide those technologies and guide users through the process of implementation. “But then there’s the other side of this, which I focus more on: It’s when should you be using it and why,” Laskaj says. “If you have a process that requires some kind of monitoring or some kind of future prediction, could you do it manually or could you use technology to do it even better than what you could already do to give you more accurate information faster?”

From opening the sunroof in your car, pumping insulin in a medical device, aligning solar panels in a satellite to moving toy cars, plastic gears are widely used in small gearboxes. In many cases, plastic materials can provide a good alternative to steel because of its low weight, good damping properties and lower cost for serial production.

The strength of plastic gears greatly depends on their temperature. Determining required material properties for the design of the gears takes a lot more time and effort than for steel gears, as the properties have to be measured at different temperatures.

In KISSsoft, 97 (yes, ninety-seven!) plastics are available for calculation of cylindrical and crossed axis helical gears. The materials range from unreinforced POMs and PAs to high performance reinforced and internally lubricated materials. Whether selecting the appropriate bearings for a concept design, designing a custom bearing for a specific application, or performing root cause analysis of a bearing failure, engineers need reliable prediction of bearing performance to make key decisions. In addition, bearing suppliers and OEMs must be able to collaborate and share data with each other, while being independent and preserving valuable IP.Romax Spin, for example, features detailed modeling of rolling bearings, fast and intuitive modeling of full drive systems, and advanced contact algorithms that accurately capture the non-linear behavior of bearings. Prior to enabling the “learning mode” alarm set points, OPTIME uses the ISO velocity recommendation (based on machine size) which alerted the customer to a higher-than-normal vibration on the machine. Utilizing the “Expert Viewer” application, the customer was able to identify the peaks in the demodulation vibration plot as lining up with the outer race frequency of the bearing. The peaks were prevalent in both the standard acceleration and the demodulation signal processing technique, indicating an advanced defect. Maintenance plans were scheduled for the fan resulting in cost savings of at least 20,000 CDN. Timken Steel develops manufacturing process for high-pressure tubing

TimkenSteel has developed a new process to manufacture high-pressure tubing (HPT) for use in the production of low-density polyethylene (LDPE). TimkenSteel's streamlined process means shorter lead times and the ability for customers to buy smaller lot sizes. The process begins in Canton where TimkenSteel's special bar quality (SBQ) steel is forged-rolled and heat treated. The steel is then sent to TimkenSteel Material Services in Houston where it is bored and honed, producing a polished inner diameter (ID) finish.

TimkenSteel, a leader in customized alloy steel products and services, today announced that it has developed a new process to manufacture high-pressure tubing (HPT) for use in the production of low-density polyethylene (LDPE).

TimkenSteel recently accepted its first order of HPT for a major petrochemical producer. Over the last decade, HPT for LDPE environments has had extended supply chains that created long lead times for North American customers.

“We have developed a more streamlined process using the assets and operations we have in place to create cost efficiencies. HPT that previously took more than a year to produce now takes a matter of months,” said Shawn Seanor, TimkenSteel’s executive vice president of sales and business development. “Another advantage our process offers is flexibility, allowing customers to buy smaller lot sizes.”

TimkenSteel’s process begins in Canton where its special bar quality (SBQ) steel is forged-rolled and heat treated. It is then sent to TimkenSteel Material Services in Houston where it is bored and honed.

TimkenSteel recently entered into a supply agreement with A&A Machine & Fabrication, LLC, of La Marque, Texas, to further process, market and sell HPT for LDPE customers. A&A completed reliability testing to ASME code on prototype tubing and processed that material to industry fabrication requirements in order to illustrate material performance. A&A and TimkenSteel then met with end-users to gain market acceptance of the material.

“HPT users will be able to plan projects with a more accurate forecast due to the shorter lead times and ease of inspection and oversight of the manufacturing process,” said C. Alan Hutchins, President and CEO of A&A.

(NSK; Headquarters: Tokyo, Japan; President and CEO: Akitoshi Ichii) has developed and launched a line of highly reliable spherical roller bearings (SRBs)1 for wind turbine main shafts that combine three advanced technologies to deliver exceptional reliability. Joining NSK’s “Super-TF” long-life material and high-hardness diamond-like DLC coating, a new extra-capacity ECA cage provides high load capacity in a total bearing solution optimized for the challenges facing today’s wind turbines.By the full application of these technological advancements, NSK has reduced raceway wear to less than one-tenth that of standard products. NSK high-reliability spherical roller bearings join a portfolio of aftermarket offerings laid out in our 2026 Mid-Term Management Plan, with a target of 25 billion yen in increased sales in the sector over fiscal 2021.1.Development Background　Any component failure in a wind turbine leads to expensive repair costs and extensive downtime. As wind turbines are installed in special environments, such as on mountains and offshore, parts replacement work and the procurement of parts, repair cranes, and other equipment to address damage can take substantial time and resources. Many large parts for wind turbines are made-to-order, and bearings for the main shaft are among the largest components used in machinery. Damage to these crucial parts can result in replacement work that requires about one year or more of downtime2. Therefore, bearings for wind turbine main shafts must be built to last—with high reliability and resistance to premature damage. 　Bearings in the main shafts of wind turbines must support the heavy weight of the blades (vanes) and fluctuating loads from changing wind conditions. Spherical roller bearings are the solution of choice, with high load capacity and their ability to tolerate mounting errors and automatically correct for deflection of the shaft or housing (self-alignment). Heavier-than-expected loads under severe operating conditions are the main culprit behind premature damage in SRBs. These factors prevent the necessary oil film from forming in the area between the rollers and bearing rings. Without this lubrication, wear occurs, requiring the bearing be replaced earlier than expected. Thus, improving the wear resistance of raceway surfaces is crucial for turbine uptime and operational reliability.2. OZ Lifting expands stainless steel range

The 0.5-ton version is designed for lifting and pulling. The hoist is lightweight and minimal effort is required to lift loads. The trolley fits most common I-, S- and W-beams; end users have different types of beams depending on the construction requirements of the building or structure where the lifting equipment will be installed and employed.There is no specific application for this kind of manual hoist and trolley, beyond the fact that stainless steel is used in corrosive environments, including wastewater treatment plants, saltwater, or wash-down applications.Minimum headroom for the chain hoist is 14.8 in. with a head weight of only 16 lbs., offering 1.5 lbs. per ft. of lift.
